Ever since his birth certificate was found collecting dust in City Hall archives in the 1930s, Johnny Appleseed has been embraced by the city of his birth. He is everywhere. So it is no surprise that Leominster makes the apple-picking season the occasion for an annual Johnny Appleseed celebration.

Medina International Apple Festival

In 1988 when the trees were big enough to bear fruit, a group of citizens decided to celebrate the harvest and the fact that Texas has the only fresh apples in July. So on the last Saturday of July in 1988 the First Texas International Apple Festival was held on the banks of the Medina River. By 1989 the apple industry had grown so much that the Texas Department of Agriculture named Medina the Apple Capital of Texas. This year will be our 13th annual festival. The festival is still held on the Banks of the Medina River and it is enthusiastically attended by a growing numbers of people and receives extensive media coverage.
